Living Here

Encompassing 17 towns and townships, and over 250 lakes and rivers, the City of Kawartha Lakes is a well-established tourist area with a myriad of year-round recreational activities, (Tourism – City of Kawartha Lakes). Some towns that you may recognize are Lindsay, Bobcaygeon, and Fenelon Falls – our city boasts both small town charm and cottage country beauty. The word Kawartha is an Anglicization of the word ka-wa-tha (from ka-wa-toe-gum-maug or gaa-waategamaag), a word coined in 1895 by Martha Whetung of the Curve Lake First Nation, meaning “land of reflections” in the Anishinaabe language. The word was subsequently changed by tourism promoters to Kawartha, with the meaning “bright waters and happy lands”.
