Family Medicine rewards me because of the "family" part. After over thirty years, many of my patients are indeed part of the family. I know and interact with them throughout the spectrum of their lives from birth to going away to educational opportunities, then returning to start families and join other extended family members.
This happens with all family physicians in all settings, but it is more significant in a rural/small town setting where you shop, meet at your children's schools, meet at your places of worship, and then meet in your work life. Rural and small town family medicine, with a well-equipped community hospital, also provides you with the opportunity to care for your own patients in recovery periods and critically ill situations, as well as the diversity of obstetrics, palliative care and emergency work.
Looking back, I have had the privilege to know and serve many City of Kawartha Lakes residents.

What attracted me to the City of Kawartha Lakes was the ability to do rural medicine with its challenges, and to live in cottage country with its great recreational possibilities. I have done anesthesia and obstetrics while I have been here, along with my family practice. More importantly, my wife and I have been able to buy a cottage which has been a slice of heaven for us. Our family has spent all our summers living at the cottage for the last 20 years - since it is only 20 minutes from my office and the hospital. Meanwhile, we have found the City of Kawartha Lakes a fantastic place to live and raise a family.
