Kawartha Lakes, April 30, 2013:  The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) and Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes Community Health Centre (CHC) are pleased to announce the recruitment of Dr. Victoria Manfredi.  Dr. Manfredi will begin practice with the Community Health Centre on Friday, July 5, 2013.


Kawartha Lakes, January 18, 2013:  The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) and Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes Community Health Centre (CHC) are pleased to announce the recruitment of Dr. Othman Elfahad.  Dr. Elfahad will begin practice with the Community Health Centre on Monday, February 4, 2013.

 


City of Kawartha Lakes, August 7, 2012:  The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) was pleased to accept a donation from BMO Harris Private Banking and the BMO City of Kawartha Lakes branches.  The donation is in support of the expansion of family doctor recruitment initiatives.


City of Kawartha Lakes, June 11, 2012:  The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is pleased to announce that it has received funding to support the expansion of three programs to recruit family doctors to the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL).   These programs are extremely important in assisting with efforts to recruit family doctors to the CKL.


City of Kawartha Lakes, May 28, 2012:  The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is asking the community to help celebrate the third annual Family Doctor Appreciation Week, running June 4 to 8, 2012.  This week will honour the many wonderful family doctors practicing in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

Who We Are

  • In 2003, the City of Kawartha Lakes established a municipal committee to address the critical shortage of family doctors;
  • This committee became the Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI);
  • KLHCI is a registered not-for-profit, charitable organization, run by a volunteer board of directors.


City of Kawartha Lakes, November 2, 2011: Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is very pleased to announce that Dr. Paul Druzin will begin practicing with the Kawartha North Family Health Team (KNFHT) in Fenelon Falls on December 5, 2011.


City of Kawartha Lakes, October 11, 2011:  Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is very pleased to announce that Dr. David McLaren will begin practicing with the Kawartha North Family Health Team (KNFHT) in Fenelon Falls on November 1, 2011.


City of Kawartha Lakes, September 19, 2011:  Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is very pleased to announce that Dr. Meileen Joynt will be opening a general family medicine practice in Lindsay at 55 Angeline Street North on October 3, 2011.

City of Kawartha Lakes, July 26, 2011:  The month of July witnessed the beginning of the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL) expanded Rural Family Medicine Residency program with the arrival of the first two of twelve Family Medicine Residents expected this year. 


City of Kawartha Lakes, July 22, 2011:  The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is very pleased with the community support received for the second annual City of Kawartha Lakes Family Doctor Appreciation Week, held June 6-10, 2011.


City of Kawartha Lakes, June 20, 2011:  The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) recently held their Annual General Meeting for the 2010-2011 year. 

Special note was made of the very productive year with the continuation of proven recruitment and retention initiatives, an increase in the number of family doctor site visits held, and especially the recruitment of four family doctors to the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL).  KLHCI is also pleased that as a result of last year’s proposal for a Rural Family Medicine Residency Program, three Universities have residents who will be training in the CKL and at the Ross Memorial Hospital for one-to-two month placements beginning July 1st.

City of Kawartha Lakes, August 19,2010:  KLHCI is an incorporated, not-for-profit, charitable organization whose mission is to recruit and retain family doctors in the City of Kawartha Lakes.  We are currently seeking an experienced, motivated individual passionate about resolving our municipality's family doctor shortage situation.

 City of Kawartha Lakes, July 12, 2010:  The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is pleased to announce that it will be receiving funding to support its Recruitment and Retention Coordinator’s attendance at recruitment activities such as medical conferences and recruitment fairs.  These activities are extremely important in making initial contacts with family doctors who may consider relocation and to assisting with efforts to recruit family doctors to the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL).

Kawartha Lakes, July 7, 2010:  At the Annual General Meeting (AGM), the Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI), Family Doctor Recruitment and Retention, announced the Board of Directors for 2010/2011 and reviewed the successful year just completed. 

 


Kawartha Lakes, May 31, 2010:  The week of May 31 – June 4, 2010 is Rural Medicine Week throughout Southern Ontario and the Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is participating by hosting three medical students from the University of Toronto (UofT) for a week of visiting, learning and exploring in the Kawarthas.

 


City of Kawartha Lakes, May 14, 2010:  The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) and the Omemee Medical Centre are very pleased to announce that Dr. Jane Clay will be opening a general family practice at the Omemee Medical Centre on May 17, 2010.

 


March 16, 2010:  Ontario continues to improve access to health care, says Rick Johnson, MPP Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock.  The City of Kawartha Lakes has received funding for a Family Health Team, one of 19 created across the province, to provide better access to family health care.

 


CAPS Newspaper, April 2010:  The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is actively recruiting family doctors to the City of Kawartha Lakes. Recruitment is needed to provide a family doctor to the over 20,000 citizens currently without primary health care.


City of Kawartha Lakes, March 12, 2010:  On Friday, March 5, 2010, the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) announced significant changes to the doctor recruitment and retention funding of the Underserviced Area Program (UAP).  The resulting changes will negatively impact the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL) as the municipality will no longer be designated as underserviced and family doctors choosing to relocate to CKL will no longer qualify for funding under the Free Tuition Program or the Incentive Grant Program.  Also affected are postgraduate Return of Service (ROS) requirements, as all communities, with the exception of the Toronto area and the City of Ottawa, will be able to recruit family doctors with ROS agreements.  Prior to these changes, those with ROS agreements were required to relocate to underserviced areas


Kawartha Lakes, January 25, 2010: The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) was pleased to recently meet with Minister of Health and Long Term Care Deb Matthews and MPP Rick Johnson, to discuss the challenges faced in the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL) with the current shortage of family doctors.


City of Kawartha Lakes, December 9, 2009: The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is pleased to announce that it will be receiving through the Government of Canada's Eastern Ontario Development Program, administered by Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation (KLCFDC), funding to develop a Rural Family Medicine Residency Program in the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL).


Kawartha Lakes, October 9, 2009: The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI), along with Community Care Health and Support Services, are pleased to announce the recruitment of Dr. David Klein and Dr. Michelle Snarr to the Community Health Centre.


POSITION SUMMARY

The Project Manager, Rural Family Medicine Residency Program Development, is a four-month contract position. The primary objective is the establishment of a Rural Family Medicine Residency Program in the City of Kawartha Lakes in conjunction with the Ross Memorial Hospital.


KLHCI is seeking an experienced Project Manager to work collaboratively with a volunteer Board of Directors to complete a four-month contract to establish a Rural Family Medicine Residency Program for the City of Kawartha Lakes.


Kawartha Lakes, September 3, 2009: The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI), along with Dr. Rob Drury, is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Ruth Wilson to his practice. The invested time of KLHCI in the recruitment of family doctors has resulted in this new addition to the City of Kawartha Lakes medical community.


City of Kawartha Lakes, August 25, 2009: September 19th, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the LCVI gymnasium is the place to be for a children's concert featuring popular entertainers Terri and Rick.

The concert is a fundraising event for the Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) and proceeds will go to support the KLHCI's family doctor recruitment and retention efforts. Admission will be $5.00 for children and adults by financial donation.


City of Kawartha Lakes, August 12, 2009: The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is pleased to announce the completion of a year and half project to strengthen organizational infrastructure and board capacity funded by The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). KLHCI is now in an even stronger position to pursue its mission to recruit and retain family doctors for the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL).

Recently, five University of Toronto medical students spent Rural Medicine Week (June 1 to 5) in the Kawartha Lakes, gaining hands-on knowledge of everything from family medicine to the proper way to put on a plaster cast.

Sometimes a new doctor is homegrown; other times there's considerable travel involved. Recently, Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative played host to both, welcoming Australian medical students Christina Chang and her husband Robert Brooks - the latter having grown up in Lakefield.

Recently, the CoKL was host to two fourth year medical students who chose to do one month electives as part of the completion of their studies. Christina Chang Brooks, and Robert Brooks are a young, married Canadian couple, who are studying medicine in Australia for a few reasons.

City of Kawartha Lakes, January 7, 2009: The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is pleased to announce the launching of a new advertising campaign.

Two highway billboards are now carrying the DOCTORS WANTED message to all who are driving east on Hwy. 7 at Oakwood and south on Hwy. 35 at Thunderbridge Road. The signs were erected in time for the Christmas and New Year travelers and it is hoped that any doctors, medical students, or their families, have made note and will be in touch.

The City of Kawartha Lakes' doctor shortage did not occur overnight; it stands to reason that a solution will likewise take time. However, inroads are already being seen by those groups that have stepped up to the plate to make a difference. Their ongoing efforts have yielded varying results, some bearing more fruit than others, but all having an impact.

Editor's note: This is the third article of a three-part series focusing on the shortage of primary care providers in the City of Kawartha Lakes, as well as the challenges, solutions and successes experienced by local groups.

Addressing the local doctor shortage has essentially come down to building the proverbial ‘better mousetrap'. With every other community and municipality equally striving to attract new doctors and primary health care providers, groups like the Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative have had to become more creative.


City of Kawartha Lakes, November 6, 2008: The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is pleased to announce the launching of their newly updated and revamped website at www.kawarthalakesdoctors.org. KLHCI is the lead organization for the recruitment and retention of family physicians for the City of Kawartha Lakes.

The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) would like to respond to recently raised questions regarding incentives to attract family physicians to the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL).


At the recent Annual General Meeting (AGM), the Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) announced the Board of Directors for 2008/2009. The KLHCI is a non-profit, charitable, organization whose mission is to recruit and retain family physicians in the City of Kawartha Lakes (CoKL). Building a Board with representation from all areas of the CoKL is a high priority and this year that representation is well in hand.


The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) would like to respond to the recent news of the closing of Dr. B. MacMillan's office and the pending closure of Dr. S. Mossad's office in Bobcaygeon.


May 20-23 was a great week for the four Queen's University medical students participating in Rural Medicine Week with the Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI).
