Kawartha Lakes, April 30, 2013: The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) and Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes Community Health Centre (CHC) are pleased to announce the recruitment of Dr. Victoria Manfredi. Dr. Manfredi will begin practice with the Community Health Centre on Friday, July 5, 2013.
Kawartha Lakes, January 18, 2013: The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) and Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes Community Health Centre (CHC) are pleased to announce the recruitment of Dr. Othman Elfahad. Dr. Elfahad will begin practice with the Community Health Centre on Monday, February 4, 2013.
City of Kawartha Lakes, August 7, 2012: The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) was pleased to accept a donation from BMO Harris Private Banking and the BMO City of Kawartha Lakes branches. The donation is in support of the expansion of family doctor recruitment initiatives.

City of Kawartha Lakes, September 19, 2011: Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is very pleased to announce that Dr. Meileen Joynt will be opening a general family medicine practice in Lindsay at 55 Angeline Street North on October 3, 2011.
City of Kawartha Lakes, July 26, 2011: The month of July witnessed the beginning of the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL) expanded Rural Family Medicine Residency program with the arrival of the first two of twelve Family Medicine Residents expected this year.

City of Kawartha Lakes, June 20, 2011: The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) recently held their Annual General Meeting for the 2010-2011 year. Special note was made of the very productive year with the continuation of proven recruitment and retention initiatives, an increase in the number of family doctor site visits held, and especially the recruitment of four family doctors to the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL). KLHCI is also pleased that as a result of last year’s proposal for a Rural Family Medicine Residency Program, three Universities have residents who will be training in the CKL and at the Ross Memorial Hospital for one-to-two month placements beginning July 1st.

Kawartha Lakes, May 31, 2010: The week of May 31 – June 4, 2010 is Rural Medicine Week throughout Southern Ontario and the Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is participating by hosting three medical students from the University of Toronto (UofT) for a week of visiting, learning and exploring in the Kawarthas.

March 16, 2010: Ontario continues to improve access to health care, says Rick Johnson, MPP Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. The City of Kawartha Lakes has received funding for a Family Health Team, one of 19 created across the province, to provide better access to family health care.

Kawartha Lakes, January 25, 2010: The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) was pleased to recently meet with Minister of Health and Long Term Care Deb Matthews and MPP Rick Johnson, to discuss the challenges faced in the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL) with the current shortage of family doctors.
The Project Manager, Rural Family Medicine Residency Program Development, is a four-month contract position. The primary objective is the establishment of a Rural Family Medicine Residency Program in the City of Kawartha Lakes in conjunction with the Ross Memorial Hospital.
City of Kawartha Lakes, August 25, 2009: September 19th, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the LCVI gymnasium is the place to be for a children's concert featuring popular entertainers Terri and Rick. The concert is a fundraising event for the Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) and proceeds will go to support the KLHCI's family doctor recruitment and retention efforts. Admission will be $5.00 for children and adults by financial donation.
Recently, five University of Toronto medical students spent Rural Medicine Week (June 1 to 5) in the Kawartha Lakes, gaining hands-on knowledge of everything from family medicine to the proper way to put on a plaster cast.

Recently, Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative played host to both, welcoming Australian medical students Christina Chang and her husband Robert Brooks - the latter having grown up in Lakefield.

Christina Chang Brooks, and Robert Brooks are a young, married Canadian couple, who are studying medicine in Australia for a few reasons.

However, inroads are already being seen by those groups that have stepped up to the plate to make a difference. Their ongoing efforts have yielded varying results, some bearing more fruit than others, but all having an impact.

Addressing the local doctor shortage has essentially come down to building the proverbial ‘better mousetrap'. With every other community and municipality equally striving to attract new doctors and primary health care providers, groups like the Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative have had to become more creative.
Two highway billboards are now carrying the DOCTORS WANTED message to all who are driving east on Hwy. 7 at Oakwood and south on Hwy. 35 at Thunderbridge Road. The signs were erected in time for the Christmas and New Year travelers and it is hoped that any doctors, medical students, or their families, have made note and will be in touch.
